Welcome to
Haven’s Urban Movement Dance Studio…

- The 2023 “Best Dance School” in Albany -

Haven’s Urban Movement is a pre-professional industry style training studio for passionate dancers of all ages.

Urban Movement was established in July of 2018 by owner and creator, Haven Barrett, whose lifelong dream of owning a cutting edge studio came to life. The studio was built with the intention of creating an innovative, urban feel to inspire dancers in a positive environment. At H.U.M. our motto is to work hard and stay H.U.M.b.l.e. Throughout the year, our dancers attend many conventions, competitions, and exhibitions locally.

Each week we challenge our dancers and push their limits with new choreography and techniques. Alternating instructors and pop-up classes give the feel of an industry setting and the chance to learn new styles.

Through innovative choreography and teaching, we aim to inspire our dancers to be confident with a positive attitude and prepare them for all avenues within the dance world.

About Haven…

Haven began dancing when she was six years old at Albany Dance Academy under the instruction of Lori Debord. She has trained extensively in various styles such as Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern, Hip-Hop (etc.) While dancing at ADA, she participated in several competitions and danced in a total of eleven productions including, "The Little Mermaid", "Peter Pan, and "Mary Poppins”. Growing up, she developed a great passion and love for dance, and hopes to give that same experience she had to other aspiring dancers.

Shortly after dancing at ADA, Haven wanted to further her dance knowledge and started dancing at studios such as Dance Vision, Groove Nation, MVP, Vega Dance Lab, Millennium Dance Complex, and Movement Lifestyle. Among these different dance experiences, Haven has also attended Monsters of Hip Hop for 11 plus years, Monsters of Contemporary, The Deep Tour, Jump Dance Convention, various other touring conventions and numerous master classes.

In high school, Haven was a four-year member of the West Albany Hi-Steppers Dance Team, captain, and a 2014 All-State Dancer. She was a 2014 Thunderbird Dance Camp assistant, and had the honor of making the All-Star Team when she attended camp. She had the privilege of choreographing the 2013-2017 hip-hop routines, fall Jazz routine and 2018 state routine, “Sounds of Silence” for West Albany High School's Dance Team and currently is the Head Coach/Choreographer for the team helping them win their first State Championship title in over a decade in 2022.

Over the years, Haven has choreographed for several other teams in the area. Haven was lead choreographer West Albany's 2018 spring Musical, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and has also choreographed for WAHS competitive acapella group, Rhythmix.

Haven started choreographing and instructing Hip-Hop at Sole Expressions Dance Studio, staying there for three years. At the age of 17, she was lucky enough to make it as a 2014-15 Blazer Dancer Finalist, as the youngest dancer in the audition process. Haven also coached/choreographed for the Albany Gems Middle School Dance Team. Soon after, she began teaching hip-hop and contemporary at Rise Up Fitness, where her creativity as an artist took flight. Not long after, she was taken on as a dancer and soloist for LYFE Dance Company: Season 2, under the direction of Durante Lambert.

Not only has she danced at various dance events and recitals growing up, but she has also performed musically at many local venues. At a young age, Haven developed a great love and passion for music. At the age of eight years old she started playing the drums, bass guitar, and singing. With this musical passion, she started performing with bands she had been a part of. Haven now continues to pursue music, when she is not dancing.

Haven has taught at Legacy Ballet, and City Dance Theatre in recent years. In the summer of 2018, Haven had the privilege of teaching CDT students choreography that would be showcased in Disneyland. While attending competitions over the last couple years, Haven received several choreography awards for her 2017 and 2018 hip-hop crews, 2022 Contemporary Companies. Owning and directing a studio of her own has been a lifelong dream come true. She wishes to inspire fellow dancers in a positive environment and help them find their passion through dance!
